Kyiv is one of the ancient Slavic centers and is the capital city of a powerful state Kyiv Rus – Ukraine, which is situated on the picturesque banks of the Dnipro River at its middle stream lower inflow of its left tributary Desna, at the border of Polissia and Lisostep.
Such rivers as the Lybid, the Syrets, the Vita (right tributaries of the Dnipro), the Gorenka, the Nyvka (Irpen’s tributaries) and collectors the Pochayna, the Kyianka, the Glybochitsa, the Klov, the Hreschatyk, the Skomorokh flow through the territory of Kyiv. The Dnipro creates numerous canals (Rusanivska, Desenka), bays (Matviivska, Gavan’, Staryk), flooded lands (Radunka, Telbyn). The lake area doesn’t exceed 3-5 hectares. Peculiarity and variety of Kyiv nature are associated with its location at the border of geographical zones – forest steppe and mixed forests. Historic and cultrural potential: during its long history Kiev has been the birthplace of many historic, public, political and cultural leaders. The most interesting tourist attractions are ruins of Golden Gates, Sophiivsky Cathedral, Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, Vydubitsky cloister (XI century), Spas church in Berestova Street, Kyrilivska Church (XII century both); Illynska church (XVII century); Voznesinnia churches, Andriyivska church, Frolovsky cloister (XVIII century), Maryinsky and Klovsky Palaces (XVIII century both); Askold tomb church, building of Taras Shevchenko Kyiv National University, Volodymyr Cathedral (all are dated XIX century); National Opera and Ballet Theatre, National Bank building (beginning of XX century); Naberejno-Mykilska church, and also monuments to prince Volodymyr and hetman B.
